Born in Argentina

Lives and works in Taiwan

Marina Burana is a painter and puppeteer/puppet builder. She is also a facilitator of participatory art projects for different types of communities.

Often inspired by literature, memories of growing up in Argentina, Taiwanese folklore and the natural world, Marina fuses fantasy and reality through figuration and nature. She usually invites friends, family and complete strangers to sit for her; as well as her six-year-old son to paint parts of her paintings. She then slowly builds up the settings in which to place her sitters giving way to a narrative of longing, neglect and fancy. In her paintings the natural world and human relationships take the form of collected scenes of everyday life, enfolded in drips of paint and vibrant colors that quietly conceal and suggest, inform and obscure, tucking away and yet manifesting something unsaid, something incomprehensible or very personal. Thus, she tries to conjure an intimate storytelling that extends to the universality of being humans and being intrinsically connected with one another as part of nature.

She has exhibited in public and commercial galleries in the US, the UK, Australia, Taiwan, Spain, Argentina, Mexico and Italy and in museums such as Tamsui Historical Museum in Taipei and in the Museum of the City of Móstoles, in Madrid.
